Almost Worn Out

This piece was inspired by the weather—and thus our effect on this earth. Marge Piercy’s poem, “The task never completed,” from her collection The Hunger Moon amplified these feelings with her beautiful words.

“Incomplete, becoming, the world

Was given us to fix, to complete

And we’ve almost worn it out.”

I used to love the wind even when we lived next to the water, the Chesapeake Bay. Now, I sometimes fear thunderstorms. I can easily imagine the huge oaks crashing down around me—or on me. Perhaps the earth has always spoken to us, but we have chosen to ignore it, so now it speaks louder in heat, and fire, and wind, and rain.

Mixed media with collage on deep wood panel.
