Hymn

“How long does it take to make the woods?
As long as it takes to make the world.
The woods are present as the world is, the presence
Of all its past, and of all its time to come.” From “A Timbered Choir” Wendell Berry

Are these the tall trees capped with the glorious colors that we yearn to view and often spend hour driving to and from on our yearly sojourns? Or are they trees that are barely standing or already felled because they have been struck by lightning in a summer storm. Fall was certainly the inspiration for this collage painting that began with a monoprint on Japanese paper, and the idea was sparked by a photo taken at Black Mountain Campground just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. But the final painting is really a culmination of many trees, some standing, some felled—and of many falls.
