Excavation

Part of series that equates human life with architecture, “Excavation” is about digging deep enough that you can stand on the edge, look down and perhaps even marvel at what you see. In building a farmhouse, my husband and I needed to excavate. Along with the bulldozer, it took a bit of dynamite to dig footings in the Carolina red clay and shale. Luckily, the extra cost and risk rewarded us with about a ton of rock, beautiful rock. Instead of having them hauled away, they became part of the structure.

Whether visual or tactile, textures are always my first application, and they engage me throughout the process. They allow me to view things from various angles, scratch beneath the surface, and explore what is not always visible.

Mixed media on deep wood panel with found object.
